Although Warren Zane officially got access to Petty material to write a new biography the book is considered "unauthorized" because Petty did not want to censor it.
This leads to some heavy weight revelations as for example Petty's 90s heroin addiction. Imagine, not only was Petty nearly 50 years old at that time but the band also kicked out bassist Howie Epstein due to his heroin abuse in the early 2000s which led to his death soon after.
While Petty excplicitly cut out this part of his life in Peter Bogdanovich’s Heartbreakers documentary "Runnin’ Down A Dream" (2007) he decided to let Zanes give us the whole treatment. Much new material is revealed, many new questions are asked and many answers are given.
Warren Zanes' new Tom Petty biography is out in November.
